H.Grimace is a London-based post-punk quartet.
Born of a partnership between vocalist/guitarist Hannah Gledhill and guitarist Marcus Browne, the band draws from the dark and enigmatic, occasionally allowing shades of shoegaze and psych to slip through the cracks.
Bassist Corin Johnson and drummer Diogo Gomez provide a driving rhythm to complement Gledhill and Browne’s songwriting; together H. Grimace has drawn comparisons to Savages and Sister-era Sonic Youth.
“Debut albums aren't supposed to be this self-assured and sharp,” NPR said of 2017’s Self Architect, a dizzying full length with songs that explore power dynamics, social pressure, and even our fleeting relationship with our environment.
H.Grimace released their latest single, “In The Body” (alongside a Georgina Starr-directed video), in August of this year. What Line of Best Fit called “a krautrock-inspired take on the female form”, it’ll get a limited run 7” release courtesy of Living Waters Records by way of their new single, “She’s In a State”.
“‘She’s in a permanent state of bliss’ is a line taken from a text for a performance by Vivienne Griffin, a collaborator on 2.1 Woman from the debut album,” says Hannah Gledhill. “The title of the song “She’s in a State” was a meditation on her acute sense of irony, and the impossibility of this notion. The song developed into a more unhinged look into the poles of self perception and the demands placed on ourselves and others to achieve the ideal mental and physical state.”
“She’s In a State” b/w of “In the Body” drops January 25th, 2018 and will be made available via 7” and digitally across Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and the rest.
